Both games I tried were very graphically simple, and I noticed that it was often necessary to tell the player what they were interacting with and let their mind fill in the rest. The characters were very basic sprites that overlapped any background pieces they walked over and had no animation. Despite it's simplicity though, Cowgirl boots was a surpringly impactful story. The music and the pacing combined with the fact that I had to find things around the house to progress the story made it a much more personal experience, and I really felt for the characters. The House of the Living was kind of so-so, I didn't really know what the plot was other than Explore the Creepy Mansion and kill people. I kept getting weird game overs too, so that was annoying. They were both interesting to check out though and I would go back to check out other games sometime.
The games were also very accessible controls-wise. There was no tutorial as far as I could see for either game, but it was simple to move around with the arrow keys and interact by pressing up against things in the environment. I think narrative experiences work well in this engine, as it would be hard to make challenging gameplay given the simple art and controls. The music and writing carried most of my interest, so I enjoyed it as a visual storytelling medium.
